Job description

Overview

A four-month, full-time fixed-term fellowship in which you pair your domain expertise with Anthropic's frontier Claude models to define and work on hard open problems in your STEM field, building datasets, simulations and evaluations that test where AI falls short of expert judgment.

What you'll do

  • Set grand challenges for your field by identifying long-horizon open problems where Claude falls short of expert judgment, and define what real progress on them looks like.
  • Build comprehensive datasets, simulations and rigorous, hard-to-game evaluations that test whether models can plan experiments, interpret data and reason about mechanisms.
  • Systematically find where models are confidently wrong.
  • Apply Claude to open problems in your domain, using test-time compute strategies and integrating the scientific tools and software your field relies on.

What you'll need

  • A PhD in a STEM field.
  • Several years of experience, for example as a post-doc or faculty member.
  • Excitement about the potential for AI to reason well about hard questions in your field where expert judgment matters.
  • Hands-on experience using Claude and Claude Code in your day-to-day workflow.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, high-agency atmosphere for a few months and delivering concrete results.
  • Existing authorization to work in the United States for the duration of the program.

Nice to have

  • Prior machine learning experience (helpful but not required).

Details

  • Full-time fixed-term fellowship running January 12 to May 8, 2027; some fellowships may be considered for an extension.
  • Compensation of $100,000–$167,000 USD for the four-month fellowship (equivalent to $300,000–$500,000 USD annualized), plus other benefits.
  • Default location is San Francisco; remote engagements within the United States may be considered in certain circumstances.
  • Attendance at a one-week in-person orientation in San Francisco is required.
  • Fellows are engaged through an employer of record, not employed directly by Anthropic.
  • Anthropic is not currently able to sponsor visas for Fellows.
  • Participation in a pod of Fellows working on related problems, meeting weekly with Anthropic researchers.
  • Later stages typically include a take-home exercise and conversations with the research team.
  • Applications are open until October 28, 2026; offers planned by November 20, 2026.
