Overview
Senior Backend Engineer on GitLab’s Authentication team, building authentication services across the Rails monolith and GATE.
What you'll do
- Design and implement authentication features including token issuance, validation, and identity services.
- Contribute to GATE and authentication services roadmap.
- Migrate authentication and token management paths from the Rails monolith into GATE while maintaining reliability.
- Build authentication mechanisms such as Workload Identity Federation.
- Address security through access management tooling and HackerOne-reported vulnerability fixes.
- Collaborate on larger projects including GATE build-out, shipping moderately sized features with moderate guidance.
What you'll need
- Professional experience with Go and/or Ruby in scaling or mission-critical SaaS products.
- Familiarity with authentication/authorization technologies (e.g., OAuth, OIDC, SAML, SSO, SCIM, LDAP, JWT, RBAC, IAM).
- Knowledge of token systems, cryptographic signing, and key management.
- Experience building or contributing to a service from concept to production.
- Proficiency in written and verbal English for remote, largely asynchronous communication.
- Experience with performance and optimization and the ability to diagnose/prevent issues.
- Experience working in highly agile, iterative development processes.
