Overview

Staff+ Software Engineer, Backend to own backend systems powering user experiences across the Claude API, Claude Code, and Claude.ai, driving complex technical and product decisions.

What you'll do

• Scope complex, multi-month backend projects through ambiguous problem spaces.
• Drive alignment with product, peer engineering, and research to identify capability gaps and ship improvements.
• Make architectural decisions impacting reliability and scalability for large-scale user serving.
• Design developer- and product-facing processes to ensure the system doesn’t fail the same way twice.
• Build and scale the foundation of the Claude API serving path for performance, reliability, and efficiency.
• Partner with inference and safeguards to optimize the full stack across teams.

What you'll need

• Have 8+ years of relevant experience as a backend or product engineer.
• Lead complex, multi-month projects or teams as a tech lead or equivalent.
• Have strong coding fundamentals across backend systems, APIs, and integrations.
• Have experience leading design and delivery of large-scale backend systems in production.
• Have skills driving alignment across technical and non-technical teams.
• Have experience with distributed systems, API design, and cloud infrastructure at scale.

Details

• Hybrid location-based policy: expect staff to be in one of the company offices at least 25% of the time.
