CFA Level 3 Crash Course

Candidates in the final weeks who have worked through the curriculum once and need a fast, complete sweep of a syllabus that is unusually easy to half-remember — the IPS constraints for six investor types, five allocation methods, four attribution approaches. Recall degrades faster here than at the earlier levels because so much of it is structured lists rather than formulas.

It also suits practising portfolio managers and wealth advisers who want the framework language sharp. If you are starting Level 3 from scratch, the full Level 3 course is the better first pass: same syllabus, 167 lessons, far more repetition per concept. This course is the second pass.

Level 3 is the level where format matters most, and this course does not rehearse it. The real exam pairs constructed-response essays with item sets, and the essays are where candidates most often fall short — not because they do not know the material, but because they cannot produce it in structured prose under time pressure, with the command word answered literally.

An MCQ course cannot train that, and it would be dishonest to imply otherwise. What it can do is make sure the underlying knowledge is actually there and retrievable, which is the prerequisite. Use this to close knowledge gaps quickly, then spend your remaining time writing past essay papers against the official guideline answers. Candidates who do only one of those two things tend to be the ones who re-sit.

One question at a time, with an explanation the moment you answer rather than banked up until the end of a block. Wrong answers are the useful ones: the explanation names the constraint you forgot or the method you misapplied while the question is still in your head. Accuracy is tracked per lesson, so a topic never sits at a comfortable 70% while one framework inside it quietly stays broken.

Two other groups get good use out of it. Candidates re-sitting, who need to find the frameworks that failed them rather than reread the whole syllabus; and charterholders who sat Level 3 years ago and want to refresh the allocation and attribution vocabulary before a client conversation or an internal review.

What it will not do is teach the material from scratch. Merged lessons move fast and assume you have met capital market expectations, the major allocation methods and the investor types at least once. A first encounter with Black-Litterman inside an eight-question lesson is not a good first encounter.

Video prep is good at first exposure. Someone walks you through contingent immunization, it makes sense while you watch, and you close the tab feeling like you know it. Three weeks later you cannot produce the trigger condition cold. Recognition is not recall. Udemy and Coursera are the right choice for that first structured explanation, and Kaplan Schweser for a full guided programme with mocks and essay practice. This course does the narrower job of forcing retrieval.

Interleave across the syllabus rather than blocking by topic, and write essays under time. The places candidates most often lose marks at Level 3 are narrower than the syllabus makes them look:

• Answering an essay's command word loosely — "justify" answered as "describe" earns nothing
• Confusing ability and willingness to take risk when both appear in one IPS vignette
• Applying a cash flow matching answer where the question set up contingent immunization
• Mixing up returns-based and holdings-based attribution, and what each can and cannot explain
• Forgetting that after-tax return objectives change the required pre-tax number materially
• Treating a currency hedge as free when the forward premium says otherwise

Each of those is a lesson here rather than a whole topic, so the fix is small and specific once found. Keep a written log of every one you miss on the way through: at Level 3 that log is usually a page long, and it is a far better guide to the last fortnight than rereading the curriculum from the start.
