About this course
Psychology is unusually easy to feel confident about and unusually easy to get wrong. Everyone has intuitions about why people behave as they do, and a good share of those intuitions are contradicted by the evidence. The subject is really the discipline of testing them: what counts as evidence, what a study can and cannot show, and which famous findings turned out to be smaller than the headline. This course drills that one question at a time.
Who this psychology course is for
Students taking a first-year psychology paper who want something to test themselves against between lectures, learners preparing for entrance or competitive exams that include a psychology section, and readers who have picked up the subject from articles and podcasts and want the actual structure underneath. No prior study is assumed; the course starts from what psychology is and how it gathers evidence.
Two gaps show up constantly. The first belongs to the student who has read the chapter and can name Piaget's stages, but freezes when handed a scenario and asked which stage the child is in, because naming was never what the exam tested. The second belongs to the confident general reader who knows the famous studies as stories, and has never been asked what the study actually measured or how well it replicated. Both close the same way, by being asked instead of told.
The course also suits anyone taking psychology as a secondary subject alongside another degree, where the syllabus is broad but the contact hours are few. In that situation the usual failure is breadth without depth: twelve topics met once each, none of them retrievable under exam pressure. - The bystander effect is about diffusion of responsibility, not indifference
- Several textbook classics replicated far more weakly than their fame suggests
MCQ practice vs video courses for psychology
Udemy and Coursera are lecture-first: an instructor works through the syllabus on video, and Coursera in particular hosts well-regarded university introductions to the subject. Khan Academy offers free written and video material organised around exam syllabi, and is a genuinely good place to meet the concepts for the first time. This course does a narrower job than any of them. It assumes the material has already reached you and tests whether you can retrieve and apply it, which is what an exam question actually asks you to do.
Best way to learn psychology
Retrieval beats recognition, and psychology itself is the reason we know that. The spacing effect and the testing effect are findings from this syllabus: material recalled effortfully is retained better than material re-read. Highlighting a chapter on memory while ignoring what memory research says about studying is a common irony. Work in curriculum order, because the dependencies are real: you cannot evaluate a developmental study without understanding research design, and social psychology assumes you know what attribution means.
