Caching Engineering Lead

Overview

Lead caching engineering at Barclays by driving the reliability, availability, scalability, automation, and performance of systems and services. Provide technical leadership, guide architectural decisions, mentor engineers, and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to support digital technology offerings.

What you'll do

• Ensure the availability, performance, and scalability of systems and services through proactive monitoring, maintenance, and capacity planning.
• Resolve, analyse, and respond to system outages and disruptions, and implement measures to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
• Develop tools and scripts to automate operational processes, reducing manual workload, increasing efficiency, and improving system resilience.
• Monitor and optimise system performance and resource usage, identify and address bottlenecks, and implement performance-tuning best practices.
• Collaborate with development teams to integrate reliability, scalability, and performance best practices into the software development lifecycle.
• Work closely with other teams to ensure smooth and efficient operations.
• Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and contribute to the organisation's technology communities.
• Provide technical leadership, mentor engineers, and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders.
• Advise functional leadership teams and senior management on functional and cross-functional areas of impact and alignment.
• Manage and mitigate risks through assessment in support of the control and governance agenda.
• Demonstrate leadership and accountability for managing risk and strengthening controls in relation to the work your team does.
• Create solutions based on sophisticated analytical thought, comparing and selecting complex alternatives.
• Define problems and develop innovative solutions through in-depth analysis and interpretative thinking.
• Build and maintain trusting relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders using influencing and negotiating skills.

What you'll need

• Proven experience of caching and distributed cache architecture, with exposure to technologies such as Redis, GridGain, or similar caching platforms.
• Experience with DevOps automation tools such as code versioning (Git), JIRA, Ansible, containers and Kubernetes (OpenShift), database CI/CD tools and their implementation.
• Experience implementing Redis container patterns on Kubernetes with the help of a Redis operator or a Helm chart.
• Proven ability to drive architectural decisions, provide technical leadership, mentor engineers, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional stakeholders.
• Experience with observability tools such as Observe, Prometheus, or Grafana.
• Extensive experience working with large, distributed, high-performance, high-availability infrastructure with 24/7 uptime.
• Good knowledge of Python, Ansible, and Kafka to support the end-to-end automation journey.
• Excellent spoken and written English communication skills.
• Minimum full-time graduation degree.

Nice to have

• Working experience in a financial environment.
• Cloud experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Good knowledge of system configuration management tools such as Chef and Ansible for database server configurations.
• Good understanding of REST API development.
