Overview
As Engineering Manager – DTT (Traction Transformer) at GEC India, lead a multidisciplinary engineering organization delivering tender, order, product, and technology engineering services to global traction transformer factories and business units. Translate business priorities into an engineering strategy, build scalable capabilities and capacity, and establish governance for safe, compliant, high-quality, on-time execution.
What you'll do
- Define and execute the GEC India engineering strategy and capability roadmap for traction transformers.
- Lead engineering delivery for tenders, customer orders, design modifications, product development, value engineering, and lifecycle support.
- Establish governance for project allocation, design reviews, technical risk management, escalation, change control, documentation, and engineering releases.
- Ensure traction transformer designs meet contractual requirements, railway and transformer standards, customer specifications, internal design rules, and safety and regulatory expectations.
- Own capacity and workforce planning, competency mapping, succession planning, recruitment, onboarding, and technical development.
- Develop engineering teams and technical experts, set objectives, coach performance, and foster accountability, collaboration, knowledge sharing, innovation, and continuous learning.
- Manage resource utilization, productivity, external engineering spending, and cost recovery across factories, HUBs, and projects.
- Define and monitor KPIs for delivery, quality, engineering hours, productivity, utilization, cost performance, customer satisfaction, and competency development.
- Drive design standardization, modularization, reuse, digital engineering, automation, and common tools and processes.
- Resolve complex technical issues, support root-cause analysis, capture lessons learned, and improve product quality, manufacturability, reliability, and total cost.
- Build relationships with global stakeholders and customers, communicate priorities and risks, and represent GEC India in technical and operational reviews.
- Ensure compliance with external and internal regulations, procedures, information-security requirements, and engineering guidelines.
- Take responsibility for actions while caring for colleagues and the business in line with Hitachi Energy’s safety and integrity values.
What you'll need
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering.
- Typically, >14 years of progressive transformer engineering experience, including substantial experience in traction transformers.
- At least 5 years in people or functional leadership.
- Strong knowledge of traction transformer design, including electrical and mechanical design interfaces, dielectric and thermal performance, short-circuit withstand, losses, noise, insulation systems, cooling, materials, and manufacturing constraints.
- Demonstrated experience in tender engineering, order execution, design reviews, technical risk management, customer interfaces, and delivery of multiple projects in a global matrix organization.
- Working knowledge of applicable IEC, EN, railway, quality, and safety standards.
- Proven ability to build and scale engineering teams, manage budgets and capacity, develop talent, lead change, and collaborate across cultures, functions, and time zones.
- Strong commercial awareness, decision-making, stakeholder management, negotiation, communication, and presentation skills.
- Fluent spoken and written English.
Nice to have
- A master’s degree or formal qualification in engineering or business management.
- Familiarity with customer-specific and regional requirements.
- Experience with engineering tools, product lifecycle management, design automation, digital workflows, and structured problem-solving methods such as Lean or Six Sigma.
