Overview
As a GPU Software Development Engineer, you will enable and optimize Intel GPUs by developing, backporting, and validating software across the stack, from firmware and device drivers to APIs and the application layer. You will design, debug, and improve GPU kernel drivers and graphics software on Linux platforms across diverse kernel environments and enterprise distributions.
What you'll do
- Develop and validate GPU kernel drivers and graphics software solutions across the development lifecycle from design and implementation to testing and release across Linux platforms.
- Contribute to the open-source graphics software community where applicable.
- Debug, optimize, and enable Linux DRM/KMD drivers, including root cause analysis of kernel panics, regressions, deadlocks, race conditions, and memory corruption across diverse hardware and software environments.
- Design and implement driver features, enhancements, and optimizations within the Linux DRM/KMD subsystem.
- Collaborate with hardware and firmware teams to enable new GPU capabilities.
- Adapt and backport upstream Intel GPU drivers (DRM/KMD) to LTS, enterprise, and customized customer kernel environments.
- Design and maintain compatibility layers and out-of-tree packaging solutions such as DKMS.
- Collaborate with firmware, KMD, user-space runtime, and compute/graphics stack teams to ensure integration, compatibility, and stability across the full GPU software stack.
- Partner with validation and DevOps teams to expand multi-kernel test matrices, regression suites, and automated build pipelines.
- Participate in design and code reviews across upstream driver development and backported driver deliverables.
- Ensure code quality and adherence to Linux kernel coding standards.
What you'll need
- Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electronics/Electrical Engineering.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in large-scale software product development with deep focus on Linux kernel and system software engineering.
- Expert-level C programming.
- Deep understanding of Linux kernel internals, driver architecture, memory management, concurrency, locking primitives, and interrupt handling.
- Proven experience developing and debugging Linux DRM/KMD drivers and device driver debugging mechanisms.
- Hands-on experience backporting Linux kernel patches and drivers across kernel versions.
- Practical understanding of kernel API/ABI drift and compatibility wrapper construction.
- Proficiency in Linux kernel debugging tools such as ftrace, perf, kdump/crash, kgdb, GDB, and dynamic debug.
- Ability to interpret stack traces and lockdep reports.
Nice to have
- Master's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electronics/Electrical Engineering.
- Deep experience with the Linux DRM/KMS subsystem, GPU memory management (TTM, GEM), DMA-BUF, and modern graphics/compute software stacks.
- Experience with out-of-tree module frameworks (DKMS, Kbuild backport frameworks) and multi-kernel distribution packaging (RPM, DEB).
- Experience triaging and resolving kernel regressions caused by upstream changes in core subsystems such as schedulers, memory allocators, power management, and PCIe buses.
- Experience supporting customer-specific or enterprise Linux distributions such as RHEL, SLES, or Ubuntu LTS, including kernel validation and issue resolution in production environments.
- Active patch submissions or contributions to the open-source Linux kernel or DRM/graphics community.
