Lead Engineer - Target India

Overview

Lead Engineer role on Target's Product Engineering teams, responsible for designing scalable architecture, hands-on development, and guiding the team's technical direction.

What you'll do

• Design scalable architecture with the best choice of tech, responsible for all the services/functionalities the team develops while ensuring quality of the team's code and/or infrastructure standards.
• Take part in hands-on development, often taking on the more complicated tasks, ensuring solutions are production ready, deployable, scalable and resilient.
• Plan and deliver work in the team in addition to your own work, promoting a learning culture through mentoring and coaching.
• Ensure product observability is in place for reliability, fostering a culture of observability across teams and using operational data to improve stability and performance.
• Drive monitoring work on the team based on the organization's monitoring philosophy.
• Ensure the security of the product and foster a security-first mindset across teams, including identifying vulnerabilities in software, creating logic to detect malicious behavior, and analyzing network or host artifacts.
• Articulate a technical strategy, the value of technology, and its impact to the business.
• Provide guidance and cultivate solutions for the most complex problems across teams.
• Encourage the team to adopt a growth mindset and educate the team about how competitors and technology companies evolve their technologies.
• Guide the team in anticipating future use cases and making design decisions that minimise the cost of future changes, evaluating options and defining pros and cons with the team.

What you'll need

• Over 7+ years of experience in software design and development.
• 5+ years focused on building scalable backend applications.
• Proven leadership in guiding technical teams and driving products at scale to successful completion.
• Advanced proficiency in Java/Kotlin development.
• Experience designing, developing, and managing scalable microservices.
• Experience with JVM-based frameworks: Spring Boot or Micronaut.
• Experience with messaging systems (Kafka).
• Experience with NoSQL databases such as Cassandra or MongoDB, and SQL-based databases such as PostgreSQL or Oracle.
• Experience building and managing CI/CD pipelines with standard CI/CD tools.
• Unit and integration testing experience (Spock, JUnit).
• Experience with cloud services (GCP).
• Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Experience with monitoring and observability (Grafana, ELK Stack).
• Strong understanding of building and managing event-driven systems.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with functional programming paradigms in Kotlin.
• Experience refactoring and modernizing legacy systems.
• Security best practices (OWASP, vulnerability scanning, secure coding principles).
• Familiarity with Scrum, Kanban, or other agile processes.
