Manager Software Engineering

Overview

Lead and manage multiple software engineers and pod leads building Caterpillar's e-commerce digital products, in line with the CAT Digital Strategy, and establish product software engineering capability in India.

What you'll do

• Hire, manage and mentor multiple software engineers and pod leads.
• Identify, hire and build world-class teams of software engineers to define, drive and execute the strategic vision.
• Improve or initiate processes that let teams collaborate efficiently with local and global teams.
• Work with product managers to develop strategy and roadmap for compelling capabilities.
• Work closely with senior engineers to develop the best technical design and approach for new product development.
• Continuously improve and drive engineering best practices, leading craftsmanship, resilience and scalability of solutions.
• Design, build and own features and programs that delight dealers and customers.
• Manage project prioritization, feature planning, stakeholder management and tracking of commitments.
• Develop detailed work plans, project estimates, resource plans and status reports; monitor and troubleshoot performance and schedule issues.
• Handle personnel issues, performance evaluation and career development of direct reports; provide technical support and direction to teams and pod leads.
• Acquire resources needed to deliver work on time; coordinate walkthroughs and reviews and ensure conformance to standards and design specifications.
• Balance technical leadership with business judgment to make technology choices in a fast-paced environment.

What you'll need

• Four-year degree from an accredited college or university.
• Fifteen or more years of experience designing and developing software applications in Java or Scala, or at least ten years of experience in Java with a master's degree in computer science or a related field.
• Three or more years of experience managing an 8 to 14 member cross-functional team.
• Five or more years of experience in public cloud technologies such as AWS or Azure.
• Deep hands-on expertise in Java/J2EE and Spring Boot (must have).
• Demonstrated leadership on medium to large-scale projects impacting strategic priorities.
• Ability to cope with shifting priorities, demands and timelines through analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to prioritize, delegate and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment and within time constraints.
• Ability to provide guidance on applying architectural design patterns for application modernization by analysing gaps between existing architecture and new business requirements.
• Proven experience designing, developing, deploying and maintaining software at scale.
• Knowledge of application architectural patterns such as MVC, Microservices and Event-driven.
• Technical expertise in building complex open-stack, microservices-based platforms or products that are highly reliable and scalable.
• Experience with message brokers such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, AWS SQS, AWS SNS, Apache ActiveMQ or Kinesis.
• Experience with datastores such as MongoDB, Cassandra, Redis, Elasticsearch, MySQL, Oracle or PostgreSQL, and developing software using relational and NoSQL databases.
• Experience deploying software using CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GoCD or Azure DevOps.
• Experience working within an Agile framework (ideally Scrum).
• Researching data to support design decisions.
• Solid knowledge of computer science fundamentals such as data structures and algorithms.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of ecommerce platforms such as HCL Commerce (WCS) Version 8.0+ or equivalent, and WebSphere Commerce subsystems (Trading, Catalog Management, Order Management, Member Management, etc.).
• Certifications in AWS/Azure, MongoDB or Redis.
• Hands-on experience with React, TypeScript and JavaScript frameworks.
• Experience with BPMN, workflow or rules engine technology such as Camunda, Temporal or Drools.

• Location: Bangalore, Karnataka, India.
• Work mode: onsite, five days a week.
• Relocation is available for this position.
• Reports to CAT Digital India Senior Engineering Manager.
