Principal Software Engineer

Overview

Principal Software Engineer for the Emergency Preparedness & Response (EP&R) team, building systems that keep critical operations running during storm and severe weather emergencies.

What you'll do

• Own EP&R technical vision and architecture for highly available, resilient, and easy-to-operate systems.
• Work backward from customer pain points and business goals to define problems to solve before coding.
• Design, build, review, and debug across the stack with backend-heavy full-stack involvement.
• Break down ambiguous, complex problems into well-scoped, achievable pieces for the team.
• Lead and mentor engineers, set technical direction, and cultivate a culture of ownership and high standards.
• Define and drive metrics, using data to validate impact and continuously improve performance.

What you'll need

• 6–8 years of demonstrable software development experience.
• 2–3 years of experience leading a team.
• Strong proficiency in Python, Java, or JavaScript with backend-heavy full-stack capability.
• Proven production experience building highly available, maintainable, and scalable systems.
• Deep understanding of non-functional requirements including availability, scalability, reliability, latency, cost, and maintainability.
• Metric-driven mindset with instrumentation to guide decisions.
