Safety Engineer (South Pole Station, Antarctica)

Overview

Serve as a Safety Engineer supporting safety, health, and risk management operations at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station and related field camps. This is a seasonal deployment role during the 2026–2027 austral summer, with an additional winter deployment option.

What you'll do

• Ensure station, field, and peripheral operations meet safety and health requirements.
• Develop and implement risk management strategies and plans.
• Conduct site visits, safety assessments, industrial hygiene surveys, and safety surveys.
• Support incident investigations and root cause analysis.
• Maintain and use safety instrumentation, including gas meters and noise dosimeters.
• Provide safety guidance to managers and field camp leadership.
• Prepare technical reports on improvement strategies and project status.

What you'll need

• Bachelor’s degree in safety sciences, chemistry, environmental science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
• At least 5 years of experience with safety and health rules, regulations, standards, and effective safety programs.
• Experience in plant operations or construction safety, fire protection, public health, and related training programs.
• Field experience supporting logistics bases and remote work camps in heavy industrial or construction environments.
• Ability to work independently with little supervision.
• Ability to adapt to high winds and low temperatures.
• U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a Public Trust Security Clearance.

Nice to have

• Antarctic or Arctic ESH experience.
• Certified Safety Professional certification.
• Certified Industrial Hygienist certification.

• Deployment location: Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, Antarctica.
• Summer deployment: October 2026 to February 2027.
• Optional winter deployment: March 2027 to October 2027.
• Physical and dental evaluations are required for deployment eligibility.
• Pay range: $73,450–$132,775.
