Senior Data Scientist I

Overview

A Senior Data Scientist in the Data Science Global Operations team at Elsevier, acting as a consultant to the Clinical Solutions team and building, testing and maintaining Generative AI, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) and NLP solutions.

What you'll do

• Act as a consultant to the Clinical Solutions (CS) team, partnering on diverse use cases and assessing the technical fit, whether an AI-tool-based solution (e.g., Claude, Chat GPT) or a pipeline-based approach best meets requirements, cost and scale.
• Build, test and maintain Generative AI, RAG and NLP solutions, evaluate their performance and implement guardrails for ethical and responsible use of AI.
• Engage in the entire life cycle of data science projects, including design, implementation, evaluation, productionisation and ongoing enhancement.
• Customize and optimize existing RAG pipelines supporting content ingestion, machine translation and contextualized information retrieval.
• Deliver efficient, production-ready Python code.
• Collaborate closely with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and the technology team to deploy and operationalize data science pipelines.

What you'll need

• 5+ years of relevant applied experience in data science, with a focus on Generative AI, NLP and machine learning.
• Proficiency in Python for advanced data analysis, model development and deployment.
• Strong experience with transformer models and fine-tuning techniques for large language models (LLMs).
• Proficiency in Generative AI technologies, including utilizing LLMs via API access, LLM evaluation tools and prompt engineering.
• Knowledge of various RAG pipelines and their practical implementation.

Nice to have

• Experience with end-to-end model deployment, including leveraging AI agents and Model Context Protocol (MCP) for context management, and cloud platforms such as AWS (including AWS Bedrock), Azure or similar services.
• Experience in Java, considered an asset.
