Senior Lighting Engineer

Overview

Lead the design and delivery of external lighting systems for UK highways, public realm, and infrastructure projects. The role combines technical leadership, multidisciplinary coordination, client engagement, and mentoring of junior engineers.

What you'll do

• Lead external lighting designs from concept through detailed design and construction support.
• Develop lighting layouts, photometric assessments, control strategies, schematics, schedules, and specifications.
• Undertake lighting calculations using Lighting Reality and electrical calculations using Amtech.
• Apply UK standards, MCHW requirements, and relevant client standards to lighting designs.
• Review and approve calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary teams, local authorities, stakeholders, and clients.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior and intermediate engineers.

What you'll need

• At least 7 years of experience in electrical and external lighting design.
• Significant experience delivering UK external lighting projects.
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD, Lighting Reality, and Amtech.
• Knowledge of UK highways and infrastructure lighting standards and regulations.
• Strong understanding of electrical distribution, earthing and bonding, lighting controls, and energy-efficient design.
• Strong leadership, communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with DIALux and AGi32.
• Experience with BIM workflows and Civil 3D.
• Professional accreditation such as IEng or CEng, or progress toward it.
• Experience on National Highways, local authority, or major infrastructure projects.
• Knowledge of sustainable lighting and whole-life cost considerations.
