Overview
Senior Patch Research Engineer for the Patch Management product team at Qualys, focused on researching and maintaining an accurate Windows third-party patch catalog.
What you'll do
- Research, author, and maintain patch metadata for third-party Windows applications.
- Identify new software releases, security updates, and version changes from vendor sources and advisories.
- Map vendor releases to structured metadata including version strings, download URLs, detection logic, and installation parameters.
- Track end-of-life (EOL) dates and update catalog entries accordingly.
- Document and validate silent installation parameters and reboot behavior for various installer types.
- Manually test patch installation in sandbox environments and verify detection logic post-install.
- Research Windows detection methods using registry keys and file-based version attributes.
What you'll need
- 4-5 years of experience in Windows systems administration, patch management, or software packaging.
- Strong understanding of Windows OS internals including registry structure and installation scopes.
- Hands-on experience with Windows patching tools such as WSUS or SCCM/ConfigMgr.
- Experience with manual patch installation, including msiexec.exe switches and repackaging.
- Solid understanding of installer technologies and their silent install mechanisms.
- Ability to trace installation artifacts to corresponding registry keys.
- Experience validating detection logic against installs and upgrades.
Nice to have
- Experience building or maintaining a software patch catalog.
- Knowledge of Windows Installer (MSI) internals such as product codes and upgrade codes.
- Knowledge of ARM64 Windows platform nuances and multi-architecture software distribution.
- Scripting experience in Python or PowerShell.
