Software Development Engineer 3

Overview

Software Development Engineer role in WEX Mobility Engineering, supporting a North America team for fleet management and mobility payments.

What you'll do

• Design, develop, and maintain high-performance backend services with object-oriented code.
• Build REST APIs using Java and internal gRPC APIs for system communication.
• Lead system design decisions and align with other senior engineers.
• Write automated tests across unit, integration, end-to-end, concurrency, and load/performance.
• Analyze systems for bottlenecks and implement scalability and stability improvements.
• Provide production live-site support through monitoring and incident resolution.
• Conduct code reviews and mentor junior/mid-level engineers.

What you'll need

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering.
• 5-8 years of professional experience in software engineering.
• Strong understanding of data structures and algorithms, and object-oriented design.
• Experience designing internet-scale services with scalability, availability, security, and reliability.
• Backend proficiency in Java or C# and frameworks like SpringBoot.
• Ability to build and optimize RESTful APIs and use SQL.
• Experience with AI-enabled development tools such as Cursor AI, Kiro, or GitHub Copilot.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in computer science or software engineering.
• 8 years of experience in software engineering.
• Experience with event-driven architecture and Kafka.
• Experience working on card payments.
• Familiarity with cloud-native architecture using Docker and Kubernetes.
• Awareness of API security and PCI DSS compliance requirements.
