Software Development Engineer III

Overview

Software Development Engineer III on Expedia Group's Pricing pillar, owning mission-critical, high-throughput, low-latency distributed pricing services at global scale.

What you'll do

• Own mission-critical services end-to-end, from technical design and API contracts through implementation, deployment, and ongoing operations.
• Partner with the business to understand how your technology stack ties to business outcomes and the bottom line.
• Analyze complex problems, break them into manageable milestones, and collaboratively deliver sustainable technical solutions.
• Participate actively in architecture reviews, write thorough technical documentation, and conduct detailed code reviews.
• Creatively test and maintain software applications and related programs and procedures using a variety of software development tools, following customer design requirements.
• Research and recommend frameworks and architectural/code design patterns, identify areas of improvement within the code, and suggest solutions.
• Advocate for operational excellence (such as unit testing, establishing SLAs, and programming for resiliency and scalability) and apply systems thinking across boundaries, making recommendations about policies and processes.
• Mentor team members, sharing knowledge and expertise to foster a culture of continuous technical growth and collaboration across teams.
• Lead design and implementation of highly scalable products and solutions with high-quality, clean, maintainable, well-documented code.
• Find opportunities for process and technology improvements, and work towards their adoption and implementation.
• Assist with supporting production systems, including investigating issues and working towards resolution.
• Exercise creativity and provide alternative solutions, removing roadblocks and driving issues to closure.
• Create and update documentation to share knowledge between team members.
• Actively participate in group technology reviews to critique your own work and that of others.
• Participate in formulating user stories in partnership with the team and product managers.
• Closely collaborate with Senior and Principal Developers and the Product Manager to find effective solutions to problems.

What you'll need

• Bachelor's or Master's in a related technical field, or equivalent related professional experience.
• 5+ years of software development experience with a Bachelor's degree, or 1+ years with a Master's degree.
• Experience in an object-oriented language (e.g., Java, Kotlin, Scala) and designing REST/gRPC/GraphQL APIs or MCP servers.
• Ability to design and build moderately complex, well-defined software systems.

Nice to have

• Experience with cloud-computing platforms (e.g., Amazon Web Services).
• Experience with managing tier-0/tier-1 applications.
• Experience with both relational and non-relational data stores.
• Understanding of CI/CD methodologies, source control with Git, and monitoring/logging tools (e.g., Splunk, Datadog).
• Experience working in an agile team environment, conducting peer reviews, and mentoring junior engineers.
• Experience maintaining projects in production environments, including bug fixing and troubleshooting.
