Job description

Overview

Command & Control Centre Associate responsible for the reliability, availability, performance, and operational excellence of Walmart's technology platforms through software engineering, observability, automation, incident management, and cross-functional coordination.

What you'll do

  • Own the complete software development lifecycle for Command & Control Center platforms, products, automation frameworks, and engineering solutions, from requirements gathering through architecture, development, testing, deployment, operations, and continuous improvement.
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain scalable, secure, resilient, and observable software solutions that improve platform reliability, operational effectiveness, and customer and associate experience.
  • Develop production-grade applications, services, APIs, automation platforms, bots, and integrations using Python (primary) and technologies such as JavaScript/TypeScript, Go, Java, C++, or C# as appropriate.
  • Apply software design principles, design patterns, secure coding practices, and engineering standards to deliver high-quality, maintainable, and extensible solutions.
  • Own production deployments through CI/CD pipelines using Concord, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or equivalent platforms while enforcing quality gates, security controls, and release standards.
  • Perform code reviews, design reviews, and architecture discussions to continuously improve engineering quality and eliminate technical debt.
  • Monitor application health, usage patterns, and operational metrics post-deployment; proactively identify opportunities for optimization, resiliency improvements, and feature enhancements.
  • Manage end-to-end ownership of software defects, enhancements, and technical improvements, ensuring rapid resolution and prevention of recurring issues.
  • Leverage telemetry, observability, and production insights to drive iterative improvements across software products and services.
  • Partner with Product Management, Program Management, Operations, User Experience, and Engineering teams to discover, define, and prioritize business and operational problems requiring technology solutions.
  • Translate business, stakeholder, and technical requirements into technical solutions, considering reliability, performance, observability, security, maintainability, and total cost of ownership.
  • Design and deliver cloud-native software solutions, platforms, services, APIs, dashboards, and workflow automation systems that support Walmart's enterprise-scale operations.
  • Design solutions with built-in observability, automation, self-healing capabilities, and operational intelligence to minimize manual intervention and improve service resilience.
  • Build reusable engineering frameworks, shared services, and platform capabilities that accelerate development and standardize reliability practices across teams.
  • Contribute to technical roadmaps and platform modernization initiatives by identifying opportunities to improve architecture, developer productivity, operational efficiency, and customer outcomes.
  • Use observability tools (Grafana, Prometheus, OpenObserve, Splunk) and SRE practices for proactive system health monitoring.
  • Work hands-on with ServiceNow for workflow automation (scripted actions, integrations, orchestration).
  • Conduct application maintenance activities (corrective, adaptive, perfective) and re-engineering; analyse application logs, performance data, and change requests to identify feasible improvements.
  • Drive initiatives for operational efficiency and service quality improvement through automation, script development, and tooling.
  • Introduce AI Operations (AIOps) fundamentals and leverage LLM-based automation for predictive incident management, anomaly detection, and intelligent ticket resolution.
  • Drive accountability for reliability and operational risks across infrastructure, platforms, and systems; translate business-impacting events into technical problem statements.
  • Implement best practices for Incident, Problem, and Change Management aligned with ITIL principles.
  • Monitor and alert on SLIs; upon SLA breach, triage, mitigate, and engage the necessary stakeholders to ensure faster restoration.
  • Lead critical incident resolution and manage high-pressure situations in a Command Centre environment.
  • Define escalation protocols and ensure timely, precise stakeholder communication during outages.
  • Perform Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Correction of Error (COE); track action items to closure and validate through regression testing.
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders; resolve conflicts effectively while maintaining focus on organisational goals.
  • Work closely with engineering, product, and business teams to deliver integrated solutions; facilitate communication and alignment across diverse functional groups.
  • Maintain technical runbooks, knowledge repositories, and operational playbooks.

What you'll need

  • BS/BE/BTech in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2.5 to 7 years of experience across software engineering, IT service management, operations, or site reliability engineering, including at least 2 years partnering with or leading global cross-functional teams.
  • Proven hands-on coding experience in Python (required) and one or more of JavaScript/TypeScript, Go, Shell, with exposure to frameworks and platforms in the Walmart stack (Azure, GCP, WCNP/AKS).
  • Strong understanding of IT Operations, IT Service Management, Performance Engineering, and Site Reliability Engineering.
  • Hands-on with CI/CD (Concord/GitHub Actions/Jenkins), version control (Git), and defect-tracking tools; comfortable owning code from commit to production.
  • Hands-on with collaboration and tracking tools: JIRA, Confluence, PowerPoint, SharePoint, OneDrive, ServiceNow.
  • Knowledge of AI Operations (AIOps) fundamentals and practical experience with LLM-based automation for IT and engineering workflows.
  • Proficiency in observability tools (Grafana, Prometheus, OpenObserve or similar) and SRE practices for monitoring and reliability.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodology, software design fundamentals, and project management basics.
  • Exceptional communication and organisational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to thrive in fast-paced environments and handle multiple priorities effectively.
  • Minimum qualification, Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 2 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Minimum qualification, Option 2: 4 years' experience in software engineering or related area.

Nice to have

  • Experience in the retail industry operations and technology landscape.
  • Retail Industry Experience: apply domain knowledge to optimise IT operations for retail environments, including high transaction volumes, distributed store systems, and Peak season readiness.
  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Information Systems, Cybersecurity, or related area.
  • Background in creating inclusive digital experiences, with knowledge of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and digital accessibility.
