Sr. Engineer - Target India

Overview

Senior Engineer on Target's product engineering team, serving as a specialist who shapes application architecture, designs and implements scalable systems, and influences fellow engineers through design proposals and feedback.

What you'll do

• Architect and implement high-performance, low-latency solutions.
• Use technology acumen to apply and maintain knowledge of current and emerging technologies within specialized areas of the technology domain.
• Evaluate new technologies and participate in decision-making, accounting for viability within Target's technical environment, maintainability, and cost of ownership.
• Initiate and execute research and proof-of-concept activities for new technologies.
• Manage total product, financials and forecasting.
• Lead the design, lifecycle management, and total cost of ownership of services.
• Lead and conduct code review, design review, testing, and debugging activities at the application level.
• Lead functional design and architecture discussions with understanding of process flows and system diagrams to enable design decisions.
• Participate in routine and non-routine construction, automation, and implementation activities, ensuring architectural and operational requirements and best practices are met.
• Provide technical oversight and coach others to resolve complex and severe technical issues.
• Lead disaster recovery activities and contribute to disaster recovery planning.
• Embed data quality protocols throughout data acquisition, processing, storage, and operational use.
• Work closely with stakeholders to refine requirements, design solutions, and perform code reviews.
• Ensure microservices are fault-tolerant and can handle high traffic.
• Set up metrics, tracing, and logs to maintain operational health.
• Provide guidance and best practices to junior team members.
• Keep up-to-date with the latest trends in distributed systems and backend technologies.

What you'll need

• 5+ years in software design and development.
• At least 4 years building scalable backend applications in Java or Kotlin.
• Proven track record designing and implementing microservices, working with event-driven systems.
• Strong knowledge of relational (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and non-relational databases.
• Hands-on experience with Kafka for data streaming and messaging.
• Proficiency with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Familiarity with monitoring and logging tools (Grafana, ELK, Micrometer, OpenTelemetry).
• Demonstrated ability to analyze and optimize system capacity, throughput, and latency.

Nice to have

• Exposure to NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Cassandra, etc.), analytical stores (BigQuery, etc.), and Apache Beam.
• Experience with advanced CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, Drone, etc.).
