Job description

Overview

Lead the instructional design practice across Mars U by owning learning asset standards and quality, and by leading and coaching a large community of instructional designers.

What you'll do

  • Own and evolve standards, templates, and quality criteria for learning assets across Mars U.
  • Define what "good" looks like for learning assets across formats (presentations, facilitator guides, learner materials, digital modules, live session content).
  • Ensure consistent application of asset standards aligned to the Learning Experience Playbook and agreed technology choices.
  • Provide clear direction on asset structure, level of detail, accessibility, and learner usability.
  • Lead, coach, and develop a large community of instructional designers (up to ~40) focused on high-quality learning asset creation.
  • Build strong, consistent capability in asset design, development, and documentation across the team.
  • Set clear expectations for asset quality, ways of working, and review processes.
  • Support onboarding and upskilling of instructional designers in tools, templates, and asset standards.
  • Act as a role model for strong, learner-centred learning asset design.
  • Establish and run quality assurance processes for learning assets across Mars U.
  • Review learning assets created by others to identify gaps, risks, or quality issues before handover.
  • Ensure assets are complete, consistent, accessible, and clearly documented for deployment teams.
  • Provide clear, actionable feedback to improve asset quality and reduce rework downstream.
  • Personally design or build learning assets only in exceptional cases, such as complex programs, flagship initiatives, or to model best practice for the team.

What you'll need

  • Degree or equivalent professional experience in instructional design, learning design, education, or a related field.
  • Experience working in a corporate, higher-education, or large-scale learning environment.
  • Relevant experience aligned to role level with demonstrated leadership of design practice or communities.
  • Deep expertise in instructional design for learning assets across multiple formats, including presentations, facilitator guides, learner materials, digital modules, and live session content.
  • Strong understanding of adult learning principles, accessibility standards, and learner-centred design as applied specifically to learning assets.
  • Proven ability to define, apply, and evolve asset standards, templates, and quality criteria at scale.
  • Experience designing assets with deployment, reuse, governance, and maintenance in mind.
  • Experience establishing and running quality assurance or review processes for learning assets.
  • Ability to identify gaps, risks, and inconsistencies in learning assets and take corrective action through guidance and standards rather than re-doing the work.
  • Strong documentation skills to ensure assets are clearly specified, complete, and ready for handover.
  • Experience working in a matrixed environment with Learning Experience Leads, Learning Project Managers, Subject Matter Experts, and deployment teams.
  • Ability to balance business needs, timelines, and constraints while maintaining asset quality and design integrity.
  • Comfortable operating as a design authority, influencing without owning end-to-end delivery.
  • Proven experience leading, coaching, and developing instructional designers or design communities, building consistent capability and confidence in asset creation.
  • Experience setting clear expectations for quality, ways of working, and review processes across a design team or community.
  • Ability to provide clear, constructive, and actionable feedback that improves quality and reduces rework.
  • Experience supporting onboarding and upskilling of designers in tools, templates, and asset standards.

Nice to have

  • Formal training or certification in instructional design, learning experience design, or human-centred design.
