Director, Solution Architect Cash Settlement

Overview

Design, develop and implement solutions to complex business problems for the Cash Settlement area, working with stakeholders to meet their needs and balancing technology risk against business delivery. The role is at Director level, managing a business function and leading strategic projects.

What you'll do

• Design and develop solutions as evolving products that align with modern software engineering practices and automated delivery tooling, including identifying and implementing the technologies and platforms.
• Apply an appropriate workload placement strategy and maximise cloud capabilities such as elasticity, serverless and containerisation.
• Produce best-practice designs incorporating security principles such as defence in depth and reduction of blast radius, meeting the Bank's resiliency expectations.
• Balance risks and controls to deliver the agreed business and technology value.
• Adopt standardised solutions where they fit, and feed into their ongoing evolution where no standard solution fits.
• Support operational support teams with fault finding and performance issues, leveraging available tooling.
• Assess solution design impact in terms of risk, capacity and cost, including estimation of project change and ongoing run costs.
• Develop the architecture inputs required for the Bank's governance processes, including design artefacts for architecture, privacy, security and records management.
• Manage a business function, providing significant input to function-wide strategic initiatives and influencing policy and procedures.
• Lead a large team or sub-function, including other people managers, and embed a performance culture aligned to the Bank's values.
• Plan, manage and consult on multiple complex and critical strategic projects, which may be business-wide.
• Provide expert advice to senior functional management and committees, and negotiate and influence stakeholders at a senior level internally and externally.
• Act as principal contact point for key clients and counterparts, and as spokesperson for the function and business division.

What you'll need

• Excellent architectural design skills, including API strategy, integration patterns, and aligning technical solutions with business objectives.
• Strong expertise in Java-based enterprise application design, including performance optimisation and modular architecture principles.
• Hands-on experience with event-driven architectures using Apache Kafka, including stream processing and high-throughput messaging patterns.
• Proficiency in container orchestration with Kubernetes, ensuring scalability, resilience and secure deployments.
• Practical knowledge of workflow automation and BPM platforms such as Camunda, with the ability to integrate process orchestration into distributed systems.

Nice to have

• Experience with distributed systems and high-availability architectures, particularly in financial services or other mission-critical environments.
• Familiarity with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines, including tools like Jenkins and GitLab.
• Understanding of performance tuning and capacity planning for large-scale, low-latency systems.
• Strong knowledge of relational databases and SQL optimisation, ideally with experience in Oracle or PostgreSQL.
• Knowledge of security best practices and regulatory compliance for designing secure solutions in banking.
