Overview
Engineer on IG's Prime Core team, building open-spec, cloud-native trading APIs and the real-time price, order/execution and reference-data systems that institutional and retail clients rely on every trading day.
What you'll do
- Write production Java that other people have to maintain: tested, readable, and honest about its edge cases.
- Work in a spec-driven, AI-assisted development workflow, specifying intent clearly and critically reviewing AI-generated output.
- Contribute to design discussions and technical decisions.
- Deploy and run what you build in AWS, and learn how the cloud behaves when things go wrong.
- Investigate production issues alongside more experienced engineers using logs, metrics, traces and JVM diagnostics to find root cause under time pressure.
- Grow into deeper ownership of services as you build confidence in the systems.
What you'll need
- 3-5 years of professional Java development experience, including hands-on AWS.
- Solid commercial experience writing Java in a production environment.
- Real understanding of JVM runtime behaviour: memory management and garbage collection, the Java memory model, and thread interaction.
- Working knowledge of concurrency and multi-threading, including visibility problems, contention, and bugs that appear only under load.
- Practical JVM diagnostics: reading thread and heap dumps, reasoning about GC behaviour, profiling, and narrowing down memory leaks or contention problems.
- Experience with the Spring Framework, ideally Spring Boot.
- Hands-on AWS experience: deployed and debugged something real in the cloud, and understand the services used.
- Practical experience using AI coding tools as part of your normal workflow, with the judgement to know when their output is wrong.
- Comfort on Linux, including basic shell scripting.
- Curiosity and persistence when something does not add up, and willingness to ask questions early and often.
