Overview
Own and run Anthropic’s Bay Area hardware labs end-to-end so teams can access physical hardware. You will manage lab bring-up, infrastructure, hardware provisioning, RMA, and on-site support while building playbooks for remote usage.
What you'll do
- Run the physical hardware lab across both sites, including receiving, staging, rack-and-stack, cabling, power distribution and load planning, and cooling.
- Bring up new server and accelerator platforms from crate to a machine ready for SSH, including firmware/BIOS-UEFI setup, out-of-band management, OS install, and network provisioning.
- Own hardware procurement for the lab, coordinating with teams, ordering ahead of need, and managing quotes and lead times.
- Manage lab hardware RMA end-to-end, including triage, swaps, shipping, tracking, and closing with vendor escalations.
- Build one-off debug and programming harnesses (e.g., JTAG/SWD/UART) and other setups such as remote power switching and console/KVM access.
- Oversee smarthands/contractor work on-site by scoping, dispatching, and validating quality.
- Handle physical access, asset auditing, and lifecycle tracking; document playbooks and lightweight tooling for remote teams.
What you'll need
- Hands-on experience running a hardware/systems/datacenter lab with rack-and-stack, copper/fiber cabling, and power distribution (PDUs, circuits, phase balancing).
- Working knowledge of server hardware management plane (BMC/IPMI/Redfish) and BIOS/UEFI configuration, serial console, PXE/network boot, and firmware updates.
- Enough Linux and networking (VLANs, DHCP, DNS, basic switch configuration) to prepare a bare machine for remote engineers.
- Experience managing vendors/contractors, quotes, and freight for physical equipment.
- Comfort and safety with power tools, bench power supplies, and wiring or rack elevation diagrams.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to know when to ask for help.
- Clear communication when flagging risks or blockers.
Details
- Location: San Francisco office (500 Howard St).
- Travel/onsite expectation: travel to nearby lab spaces required; expect to be in-office more frequently than a 25% hybrid baseline.
