Overview
Lead Software Engineer (Backend) for the Service Mesh Engineering team, guiding the technical direction and execution of a service mesh platform that enables secure, observable service-to-service communication across microservices.
What you'll do
- Define and lead a multi-year technical strategy for the service mesh platform (data plane/control plane, roadmap, migrations).
- Architect and review complex changes to service mesh infrastructure (Istio, Envoy or equivalent) with reliability, scalability, and security focus.
- Own platform-wide concerns including traffic management, service discovery, mTLS/identity, observability, rate limiting, and cross-cluster communication.
- Break down multi-quarter plans into deliverables and lead execution.
- Guide mesh incident response and root-cause analysis to ensure long-term fixes.
- Mentor engineers and lead technical reviews, hiring input, and capability growth.
- Promote AI-assisted engineering tools and apply AI to operational workflows.
What you'll need
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related, or equivalent practical experience.
- 6+ years of software engineering experience.
- At least 3 years working on distributed systems, networking, or platform infrastructure.
- Hands-on expertise with service mesh technologies (Istio/Envoy/Linkerd/Consul or equivalent) operating at scale in production.
- Experience with microservices networking including HTTP, TCP/IP, gRPC, TLS/mTLS, load balancing, and service discovery.
- Proficiency in Go (preferred), Java, or Python and experience contributing to/extending mesh-related open-source projects.
- Experience with Kubernetes/container orchestration and cloud-native infrastructure (AWS/GCP/Azure).
