Model Performance Software Engineer, Claude Code

Overview

Staff Software Engineer role on the Claude Code team, setting technical direction at the intersection of engineering and research. You will design evaluation and infrastructure to measure, understand, and improve Claude’s coding capabilities.

What you'll do

• Set technical direction for evaluation systems, research infrastructure, and internal tooling across the Claude Code team.
• Architect evaluation frameworks for measuring model capabilities across diverse coding tasks and scaling with the research roadmap.
• Lead infrastructure design to enable researchers to run experiments at scale and make key tradeoffs.
• Identify and drive high-leverage engineering investments to completion.
• Act as a senior technical bridge between product and research, influencing prioritized capabilities and progress measures.
• Mentor engineers by reviewing designs, unblocking peers, and shaping engineering standards.
• Own critical systems end-to-end, from architecture through production reliability and long-term health.

What you'll need

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including operating as a Staff or Principal engineer (or equivalent).
• Experience architecting and owning complex, high-stakes systems (pipelines, infrastructure, or platforms).
• Experience setting technical direction that others follow via design docs, architectural decisions, or technical strategy.
• Ability to thrive in high-intensity environments with fast iteration cycles and judgment on when to invest in durability.
• Ability to take full ownership of ambiguous, open-ended problems and drive them to completion with minimal direction.
• Power-user capability with agentic coding tools and intuition about model capabilities and limitations.
• Expertise in Python and TypeScript.
