Principal MTS, Software Engineer

Overview

Principal Software Engineer/Architect responsible for designing, developing, and operating eBay’s Hadoop infrastructure and distributed data systems.

What you'll do

• Lead architectural enhancements for scalable, highly available Hadoop and open-source data platforms.
• Own technical execution of distributed data-processing pipelines and platform frameworks.
• Optimize resource utilization, throughput, and performance across distributed environments.
• Design internal and customer-facing tools for data access, governance, and cluster management.
• Integrate Hadoop data layers with broader enterprise platforms and automate workflows.
• Diagnose and resolve multi-node failures, bottlenecks, and distributed-system defects.

What you'll need

• 15+ years of software design and distributed-systems development experience.
• Expert proficiency in Java and/or Scala.
• Strong knowledge of algorithms, concurrency models, and data structures.
• Mastery of Linux/Unix internals, network topologies, and distributed-computing principles.
• Hands-on architectural expertise with Hadoop, Spark, Apache Iceberg, and Apache YuniKorn.
• Experience with root-cause analysis, memory profiling, and performance tuning.
• History of shipping complex infrastructure products in enterprise environments.

Nice to have

• Open-source project contributions or upstream community engagement.
