Principal Software Engineer

Overview

Principal Software Engineer on Twilio’s Data Substrate team, leading the design and development of the Data Platform.

What you'll do

• Lead the design and development of data infrastructure with a focus on scalability, reliability, and performance.
• Serve as the subject matter expert in distributed systems and data technologies.
• Architect and implement scalable data systems, storage solutions, and processing frameworks.
• Drive technical innovation and research in emerging data technologies.
• Mentor and coach engineers to foster technical excellence and collaboration.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
• Ensure data quality, integrity, and security across the data lifecycle.

What you'll need

• 10+ years of experience in software development (or related field) with at least 5 years in a technical leadership role.
• Expertise in architecting and delivering large-scale data platforms, including cloud systems like AWS and deployment via K8s/Terraform/Helm.
• Expertise in big data technologies including Clickhouse, Kafka, and Spark.
• Proficiency in Python, Java, Bash, Go.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills to influence technical decisions and drive alignment.
• Experience architecting for high availability, observability, and incident response in distributed systems.

Details

• Remote role based in the United States, not eligible to be hired in specific San Francisco Bay Area regions.
• Occasional travel may be required for in-person meetings.
