Principal Software Engineer

Overview

The Principal Software Engineer will influence a wide variety of business and technology decisions, design, implement and deliver cross-functional solutions for highly complex problems across infrastructure and platforms, and provide technical direction and set up an excellent engineering culture.

What you'll do

• Identify problems, take initiative and make an impact by driving clarity, convergence and closure across teams and stakeholders.
• Actively look out for tough problems faced by customers, engineers and business leaders.
• Define and execute the technical strategy for retail technology, ensuring alignment with business objectives, in collaboration with senior leadership.
• Decompose complex problems to build simple solutions that can evolve over time.
• Ensure smooth deployment and adoption of new systems in partnership with product owners and key stakeholders.
• Own the end-to-end technical view of a solution and shape the synergy between multiple systems.
• Identify and analyze tradeoffs to create exemplary architecture in terms of stability, scalability and cost-effectiveness.
• Champion and implement modern software methodologies to streamline development processes.
• Provide technical leadership in design and development of a system, ensuring the best quality of high-level and low-level designs.
• Build secure systems that protect information and assets while delivering business value.
• Dive deep to fix complex system issues and drive root cause analysis during critical production outages.
• Implement robust testing strategies, including unit tests, integration tests, regression suites and automated testing, to guarantee software reliability.
• Continuously monitor and optimize the performance of software applications to provide the best customer experience, and maintain clear and comprehensive documentation for software systems and processes.
• Create a culture of structured problem solving using techniques like first principles, serve as a source of latest trends, and drive best practices to achieve high standards.
• Explore and adopt open-source technologies and contribute back to the open-source community.
• Ensure operational overhead of the systems is very low, with dashboards, runbooks and alerts well-maintained and up to date.
• Produce high quality code, documentation, tests and monitoring, and conduct regular reviews of source code, low level design and high-level design.
• Actively engage with and mentor junior engineers on best practices in software architecture, design and implementation, and commit source code that serves as an example for other engineers.

What you'll need

• 10 years of experience in software development or related field.
• 8 years of experience in any of the following: software engineering competencies, frontend technologies (UI/UX), middleware (microservices and APIs), database technologies, DevOps.
• 8 years of experience working on projects involving the implementation of solutions applying development life cycles (SDLC).
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer information systems (CIS), or related field (or equivalent work experience in lieu of degree).
• Relevant experience managing infrastructure-related technologies such as Kubernetes, operating systems, virtualization and CI/CD platforms, and building a software platform on top of infrastructure systems.

Nice to have

• Master's degree in computer science, CIS, or related field.
• 8 years of experience working with defect or incident tracking software and application and integration middleware.
• 8 years of experience working with four or more of the following: continuous integration/continuous deployment tools, frontend technologies (UX/UI), middleware, database technologies, DevOps.
• 8 years of experience in systems analysis, including defining technical requirements and performing high level design for complex solutions.
• 6 years of experience working with an IT Infrastructure Library framework.
• 6 years of experience leading teams, with or without direct reports.
