Research Engineer, Machine Learning (RL Velocity)

Overview

Research Engineer on the RL Velocity team, building and improving the RL training infrastructure that enables researchers to iterate quickly and reliably on RL at Anthropic.

What you'll do

• Build and improve RL training infrastructure used by researchers day-to-day.
• Identify and remove bottlenecks across the RL stack via debugging, profiling, and rearchitecting.
• Partner with researchers and adjacent teams (e.g., inference, sandboxing) to understand pain points and ship tooling.
• Own reliability and performance of research runs end-to-end.
• Contribute to design decisions shaping how Anthropic does RL at scale.

What you'll need

• Strong software engineering fundamentals and a track record of building performant, reliable systems.
• Experience with ML infrastructure, distributed systems, or research tooling.
• Comfort operating across the stack from low-level performance work to RL algorithms.
• Bias toward shipping and iterating quickly.
• Ability to find leverage through platforms rather than individual experiments.

Details

• Annual compensation range: $500,000–$850,000 USD.
• Location policy: hybrid; expected to be in an office at least 25% of the time.
• Visa sponsorship: supports visas, but may vary by role/candidate.
• Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education/training/experience.
