Overview
Build and maintain Supabase's Python SDK, the library Python developers use to reach Supabase's database, auth, storage, realtime and edge functions, in both sync and async flavors.
What you'll do
- Build and evolve the Python SDK across database, auth, storage, realtime and functions, with both sync and async APIs that feel natural in Python.
- Start new things: find what's missing, make the case for it, and build it.
- Work in the open: triage inbound issues, review and shepherd outside contributions, keep CI and release automation healthy, and hold a clear, kind line on scope.
- Own the typing experience so the SDK is fully typed and checker-friendly, keeping autocomplete and static analysis correct in real codebases.
- Keep the SDK working across environments, including multiple Python versions, sync and async frameworks, workers, serverless and notebooks, with dependency ranges that don't fight users' projects.
- Work on realtime: long-lived websocket connections, reconnection, and subscription and presence semantics.
- Track platform changes in auth, realtime, storage, postgrest and edge functions, make sure the SDK reflects them, and note them in the changelog.
- Design in public: write RFCs, migration guides, release notes and docs, and handle breaking changes through a deprecation path plus a migration story.
- Make the SDK legible to AI coding agents, which are a major consumer of it.
What you'll need
- Deep knowledge of modern Python typing, including generics, protocols, overloads and TypedDict, and experience running strict type checking.
- Experience authoring or maintaining a published library with a public API and external users.
- Experience on the maintainer side of open source: issue triage, reviewing outside PRs, release automation, changelogs and semver, security reports, and declining feature requests.
- Fluency in asyncio.
- Knowledge of Python packaging for libraries: pyproject.toml, wheels, modern tooling, version support policy, and dependency pinning.
- A habit of testing: unit, type-level and end-to-end against a real stack, with a regression test for every fix.
- Clear writing for design docs, changelogs and issue replies.
- Real autonomy: find the important work, scope it, ship it, and state what you didn't do.
- Clear communication across technical and non-technical audiences.
- Comfort with ambiguity and moving quickly.
Nice to have
- Experience running a major-version migration for a public package.
- Familiarity with JWT/OAuth.
- Experience building integrations for AI agent frameworks.
- Experience generating idiomatic clients from a schema.
- Experience in async or globally distributed teams.
- Energy for solving real-world problems for developers.
Details
- Fully remote; hiring globally. Operates asynchronously with flexible work.
