Senior Backend Engineer (Go), Tenant Scale: Gitaly

Overview

Senior Backend Engineer on the Gitaly team, building GitLab’s Git data storage tier and helping ensure reliable, secure, fast repository access.

What you'll do

• Own moderately sized to complex technical initiatives from definition through rollout and operational follow-through.
• Lead technical design for distributed storage, repository management, performance, reliability, and scalability.
• Partner with engineers across GitLab, including Git, Infrastructure, SRE, Dedicated, and customer-facing teams.
• Improve engineering practices via mentoring, documentation, knowledge sharing, and code/design reviews.
• Provide operational ownership including incident response, post-incident improvements, and capacity/performance analysis.
• Handle user emergencies, platform alerts, and support requests with regular on-call duties.

What you'll need

• Significant professional experience building, debugging, and optimizing distributed or highly available systems in production.
• Experience owning complex projects end to end (design, execution, rollout, operational support).
• Strong systems design skills for reasoning about performance, failure modes, consistency, concurrency, capacity, and observability.
• Professional experience with Go or another backend or systems language.
• Experience operating production systems and participating in incident response to drive durable improvements.
• Experience mentoring engineers and improving quality of designs, code, testing, and documentation.
