Senior Java Developer

Overview

Senior Java Developer role in Citi's Applications Development group, acting as Tech Lead and senior developer supporting multiple banking applications together with global teams.

What you'll do

• Work as Tech Lead and senior developer and support multiple banking applications together with global teams in other locations.
• Take responsibility for timeline and good quality of solution deliverables.
• Involve in or do system/component design and implementation with counterparts in New York, London, and other locations.
• Translate functional requirements or specifications into technical solutions and implement the solutions with plans and executions.
• Be responsible for people management, including hiring, coaching, team building and performance evaluation.
• Drive continuous improvement by implementing best practices in software architecture, software development process and new technologies.
• Communicate with business and other project teams to deliver the project per agreed schedule.
• Recommend and develop security measures in post-implementation analysis of business usage to ensure successful system design and functionality.
• Consult with users/clients and other technology groups on issues, recommend advanced programming solutions, and install and assist customer exposure systems.
• Ensure essential procedures are followed and help define operating standards and processes.
• Serve as advisor or coach to new or lower level analysts.
• Act as SME to senior stakeholders and/or other team members.
• Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency.

What you'll need

• Deep mastery of Java (Java 11 / 17 / 21), high-concurrency programming, multithreading, memory management, garbage collection tuning (ZGC/G1), and low-latency optimization.
• Extensive experience with Spring Framework (Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, Spring Data, Spring Security, Spring Batch) and Domain-Driven Design (DDD).
• Expert-level design and production operations with Apache Kafka (cluster architecture, partitions, consumer groups, Kafka Streams/Connect, schema registry, idempotent producers).
• Enterprise messaging and integration via IBM MQ / JMS and transaction management across distributed systems (Saga pattern, two-phase commit alternatives).
• Advanced RESTful API design, OpenAPI standards, API Gateways, gRPC, OAuth2/OIDC, and mutual TLS (mTLS).
• Relational: Oracle (advanced PL/SQL, partitioning, index optimization, query execution plan analysis, Active Data Guard).
• NoSQL / Document: MongoDB (sharding, replica sets, aggregation pipelines, performance tuning at scale).
• Proven experience implementing Circuit Breaker (Resilience4j), Rate Limiting, Bulkheads, and Distributed Tracing (OpenTelemetry/Jaeger).
• 8+ years of relevant experience.
• Experience in systems analysis and programming of software applications.
• Experience in managing and implementing successful projects.
• Working knowledge of consulting/project management techniques/methods.
• Ability to work under pressure and manage deadlines or unexpected changes in expectations or requirements.
• Bachelor's degree/University degree or equivalent experience.
