Overview

Senior PostgreSQL SRE role applying software engineering techniques, automation and best practices in incident response to ensure reliability, availability and scalability of systems and platforms.

What you'll do

• Ensure availability, performance and scalability of systems and services through proactive monitoring, maintenance and capacity planning.
• Resolve, analyse and respond to system outages and disruptions, and implement measures to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
• Develop tools and scripts to automate operational processes, reducing manual workload, increasing efficiency and improving system resilience.
• Monitor and optimise system performance and resource usage, identify and address bottlenecks, and implement best practices for performance tuning.
• Collaborate with development teams to integrate best practices for reliability, scalability and performance into the software development lifecycle, and work closely with other teams to ensure smooth and efficient operations.
• Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations, and actively contribute to the organisation's technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
• Advise key stakeholders, including functional leadership teams and senior management, on functional and cross-functional areas of impact and alignment.
• Manage and mitigate risks through assessment, in support of the control and governance agenda, and demonstrate leadership and accountability for managing risk and strengthening controls in relation to the team's work.
• Seek out, build and maintain trusting relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to accomplish key business objectives.

What you'll need

• Proven experience as a Principal Level Database Administrator, with a focus on PostgreSQL and similar database technologies such as Oracle or MS-SQL.
• Proven track record of implementing and leading SRE practices across large organisations or complex teams.
• More than ten years of professional experience and expert-level knowledge of telemetry, monitoring and platform observability tooling (e.g., ESAAS, Grafana, Prometheus), with experience in customising and scaling these solutions.
• Leadership role in implementing modern DevOps and SRE practices in enterprise environments.
• Proven expertise in SQL query optimisation and database performance tuning at scale.
• Experience with DevOps automation tools such as Code versioning (git), JIRA, Ansible, Containers and Kubernetes (OpenShift), and database CI/CD tools and their implementation.
• Experience in implementing PostgreSQL container patterns on Kubernetes with the help of a PostgreSQL operator or Helm charts.
• Recognised as a PostgreSQL subject matter expert, serving as the highest level of technical escalation for complex database issues.
• Proven experience in designing and executing database migration strategies at enterprise scale.
• Exceptional collaboration skills with executives and cross-functional teams.
• Extensive experience working with large, distributed, high-performance, high-availability databases with 24/7 uptime.
• Minimum graduation degree.
• Extensive knowledge and working experience in the Technology, Information and Security domain.

Nice to have

• Working experience in a financial environment.
• Cloud experience (AWS, Azure, GCP).
• Experience of working with data migration tools and software.
• Expert in system configuration management tools such as Chef and Ansible for database server configurations.
• Expert expertise with scripting languages (e.g. PowerShell, Python, Bash) for automation and migration tasks.
• AWS Certified Database – Specialty certification.
