Senior Software Engineer

Overview

Senior/Lead Software Engineer to design, build, and operate high-throughput data services and REST APIs for Morningstar Indexes Technology in India.

What you'll do

• Design and build production-grade Python services and REST APIs for index and fund data products.
• Build large-scale data processing pipelines using Pandas/NumPy with Python concurrency.
• Own microservice design end to end, including API contracts, error handling, idempotency, retries, observability, and deployment.
• Write well-tested and maintainable code using pytest and modern dependency tooling.
• Work with PostgreSQL for schema design, bulk loading, and query performance.
• Operate services on AWS with a focus on reliability, cost, and security.
• (Lead level) Drive technical design reviews, mentor engineers, and deliver multi-quarter initiatives.

What you'll need

• 5–8 years of backend development experience for Senior level in Python.
• Hands-on experience building REST APIs/microservices with FastAPI or Flask, including auth, validation, versioning, and error handling.
• Experience using Pandas and NumPy for vectorization, memory optimization, and chunked processing on large datasets.
• Practical concurrency experience with multiprocessing (and ideally asyncio/threading) including failure modes.
• Strong data structures and algorithms plus robust exception handling (retries, timeouts, idempotency, graceful degradation).
• pytest experience for fixtures, parametrization, mocking, and coverage discipline.
• Modern Python packaging/dependency management with Poetry or uv, including virtual environments and reproducible builds.

• Location: Mumbai.
• Hybrid work environment with in-person collaboration each week; in most locations the hybrid model is four days in-office each week.
