Overview
Senior Software Engineer II role on Samsara's team building zero-to-one AI-powered and data-driven products for the Connected Operations Cloud. Leveling is open from Senior through Staff+ across platform and product.
What you'll do
- Take ownership of technically complex, mission-critical areas.
- Define and drive technical strategy for new products and platform capabilities, from backend services and APIs to the customer-facing UI.
- Design and ship full-stack features end to end across backend, frontend, and potentially mobile, delivering AI-powered products that solve real operational problems.
- Partner with product, design, and customer-facing teams to translate ambiguous, real-world problems into clear technical plans and measurable outcomes.
- Build and scale the systems behind AI-driven products, including data ingestion, APIs, and the workflows that put intelligence into the hands of operators.
- Raise the bar for engineers around you through code reviews, design reviews, and technical mentorship.
- Champion, role model, and embed Samsara's cultural principles as the company scales globally and across new offices.
What you'll need
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- 8+ years of experience in software design and development, including building and operating production systems at scale.
- Strong full-stack fundamentals, comfortable working across backend services, APIs, and frontend (web or mobile) to ship complete products.
- Proficiency in modern languages and frameworks (Go, Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, React, or similar).
- Demonstrated experience leading cross-team or cross-org projects from inception through rollout, including managing ambiguity, driving alignment, and delivering measurable impact.
- Experience building AI-powered or data-driven products; training models is not required, but you must know how to turn AI capabilities into products customers love.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to translate between technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- A track record of building zero-to-one products, systems you left in a meaningfully better place, or hard problems you refused to let stay unsolved.
Nice to have
- Experience shipping AI-powered features in production, such as LLM-based products, agentic workflows, recommendation systems, or other customer-facing AI.
- Comfort with modern AI-augmented development workflows (Cursor, LLMs, etc.).
- Background working with real-world operational data (telematics, sensor data, work orders, inspections) or a strong interest in learning the domain.
- A proven track record of mentoring senior engineers and influencing engineering culture, standards, and best practices beyond a single team.
- Side projects, open-source contributions, or other signals of curiosity and drive outside the day job.
