Software Engineer - Backend (Java)

Overview

Software Engineer on the Unified Notification Platform team under the Core Platform Organization, building large-scale distributed systems that send notifications via SMS, Email, Push Notifications, Alerts and Webhooks.

What you'll do

• Implement tasks within the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), with structure and oversight from more experienced staff.
• Follow well-established internal conventions and standard procedures.
• Understand internal standards and processes and apply them to make technical decisions.
• Collaborate with peers, manager, and project lead to understand tasks and review solutions.
• Contribute to code and design reviews.
• Navigate complex architecture and designs and develop features to enhance platform functionality and stability.
• Interface with multiple stakeholders to understand business and customer needs.
• Actively participate in feature development and enhancements.
• Gain domain knowledge and solve complex problems related to scalability and throughput.
• Participate in design discussions and provide valuable insights.
• Provide solutions and fixes to issues and bugs reported against the platform.

What you'll need

• 1+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor's degree, OR any equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 1-4 years of experience in software development.
• Solid understanding of algorithms and data structures.
• Knowledge of object-oriented design, design patterns and multi-threaded programming.
• Strong OOP skills, with ability to analyse requirements and transform them into scalable software designs.
• Experience with HTTP and REST APIs, and competence designing and building web services/microservices in a commercial setting.
• Competent in design/implementation for reliability, availability, scalability and performance.
• Strong troubleshooting, debugging, and analytical skills.
• Hands-on Java programming expertise (Core Java, J2EE, Spring framework).
• Hands-on building RESTful services.
• Follow coding and design best practices.
• Experience working with SQL and NoSQL solutions, with clear understanding of pros and cons of relational and free-form databases.
• Ability to determine impact of architectural solutions and make recommendations.
• Ability to design, architect and build data systems and pipelines.
• Ability to navigate org boundaries and work fairly independently with limited handholding.
• Exhibit one-team behaviour and work with several stakeholders and team members cohesively.
• Experience in pair programming with AI.

Nice to have

• Knowledge and a particular interest in issues related to large-scale distributed stream processing and real-time computation systems.

• Location: Bangalore, Karnataka, India.
• Hybrid work model: 3 days in the office and 2 days at your choice of PayPal office or home workspace (for the majority of employees).
