Software Engineer III - B2

Overview

Software Engineer III (B2 Object Storage) role on Backblaze's B2 APIs and subsystems that let customers and integrations upload objects, manage object lifecycles, track usage, and interact with billing and storage systems.

What you'll do

• Design, implement, and maintain B2 and S3-compatible APIs to ensure correctness, performance, and backward compatibility for a large base of external customers and integrations.
• Lead technical design discussions and produce clear design documents.
• Instrument services, develop metrics, define meaningful SLIs/SLOs, and drive reliability improvements.
• Actively participate in on-call rotation to help determine incident root causes and identify follow-up remediation items.
• Help build new features, improve the scalability of systems, and build internal observability tooling.

What you'll need

• 7+ years of server-side Java programming experience.
• Strong background in algorithms and data structures.
• Experience writing software for large scale distributed systems, including design, implementation, testing, and rollout.
• Communicates proactively in a remote environment by keeping the team informed, surfacing blockers early, and moving work forward.
• Professional experience incorporating AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Gemini, Cursor, Claude Code).

Nice to have

• Cassandra and Vitess experience.
• Agile and scrum experience.
