Overview
Staff Backend Engineer role providing technical leadership across backend and adjacent teams, solving complex cross-cutting problems.
What you'll do
- Lead the technical design and delivery of large backend initiatives spanning teams.
- Drive modular backend, service, data, and platform architecture strategy.
- Define and improve standards for APIs, testing, security, performance, observability, and operability.
- Create shared patterns for dependency management, data ownership, eventing, and failure isolation.
- Participate in on-call and incident response and act as an escalation point during complex incidents.
- Mentor engineers and reduce technical debt to improve throughput.
- Lead team-level adoption of AI-assisted and agentic engineering workflows with guardrails.
What you'll need
- Demonstrated technical leadership across more than one team or a broad product area.
- Deep backend architecture and production experience in complex applications/services/platforms.
- Experience modernizing monoliths/legacy backends toward modular architecture in production.
- Ability to create alignment through written proposals and decision records without constant escalation.
- Product judgment balancing outcomes, delivery speed, reliability, and long-term platform investment.
- Experience mentoring engineers and shaping standards through code review and documentation.
- Production experience evaluating and improving AI-assisted/agentic engineering workflows.
