Staff Backend Engineer, Database Automation (Go)

Overview

Build and operate Go-based automation for PostgreSQL across GitLab's infrastructure. The role focuses on database lifecycle management, PostgreSQL as a service, and safe operation at internet scale.

What you'll do

• Build Go automation for PostgreSQL provisioning, configuration, upgrades, failover, scaling, and decommissioning.
• Develop standardized PostgreSQL as a service capabilities across cloud infrastructure.
• Design automation for high-throughput, always-on production workloads.
• Build safe PostgreSQL major-version upgrade workflows validated against production traffic.
• Improve PostgreSQL performance, scalability, and data health.
• Review changes and document database automation practices and operational patterns.
• Operate production systems and use feedback to guide improvements.

What you'll need

• Professional experience with PostgreSQL in large, complex production environments.
• Experience building or operating a database-as-a-service product.
• Proficiency with Go for backend service design, implementation, testing, and review.
• Experience with Kubernetes operators, controllers, or comparable stateful-service automation.
• Knowledge of infrastructure as code, high availability, replication, backups, and performance trade-offs.
• Strong written communication and effective asynchronous collaboration skills.
• Ownership of technical direction for a major initiative and ability to influence and mentor engineers.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with Ruby.

• Salary: $152,800–$259,200 USD yearly for the listed level in the United States.
