Overview

Staff Software Engineer - Backend within Okta's Identity Security Pillar, playing an architectural and hands-on role in scaling foundational platforms and web applications, with emphasis on backend architecture and distributed services.

What you'll do

• Lead, design, architect, and build high-quality, scalable software by enforcing best practices around software engineering, architecture, and processes
• Raise the bar on engineering excellence by improving standard methodologies, producing best-in-class code, documentation, testing, and monitoring
• Collaborate with product and R&D engineers to translate product requirements into technical solutions
• Identify and resolve technical issues and performance bottlenecks
• Stay up to date with the latest industry trends and technologies to continuously improve our products
• Mentor colleagues and help promote knowledge-sharing

What you'll need

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building and maintaining complex, enterprise-grade distributed systems in high-growth environments
• 3+ years of hands-on experience designing and implementing backend services using Python
• Deep knowledge of backend architecture, pipeline design, and data persistence patterns
• Practical experience working with relational databases as well as NoSQL/caching stores
• Strong foundation in computer science fundamentals, data structures, algorithms, and scalable software design patterns
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, paired with strong communication abilities to collaborate across distributed, global engineering teams
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent practical experience)

Nice to have

• Experience with modern cloud platforms (particularly AWS) and container orchestration
• Experience in identity and security domains (IAM, OAuth, OIDC, SAML, posture management, threat detection, or cloud security)
