Backup Engineer (Rubrik Platform)

Overview

The Backup Engineer (Rubrik Platform) is responsible for the end-to-end design, implementation, operation, and optimization of backup and recovery services within Haleon's global infrastructure landscape, ensuring data protection, cyber resilience, and recoverability across hybrid environments.

What you'll do

• Design and implement a scalable backup and recovery architecture using Rubrik CDM across Azure virtual clusters, on-premise Rubrik "Brik" appliances, Edge appliances at manufacturing sites, and Rubrik Cloud Vault (offsite third copy).
• Define and enforce backup strategies (full, incremental, snapshot-based), retention and archival policies, and replication and disaster recovery design (site-to-cloud/region-to-region).
• Configure integration with VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), vCenter, Windows/Linux servers, SQL/Oracle/Postgres databases, Active Directory, Microsoft 365 and enterprise applications.
• Continuously assess the platform architecture and improve performance, scalability, and resilience.
• Engineer and ensure the Operations teams maintain Rubrik clusters (Azure and on-premise), Rubrik Security Cloud (RSC) for centralized management, and backup agents (RBS and others where applicable).
• Support Operations in daily activities: backup scheduling and job monitoring, failure analysis and re-runs, capacity and storage management, and ensuring system availability and performance.
• Configure and manage monitoring of backup success/failure rates, cluster health and hardware metrics, and replication and archival jobs; enable proactive alerting for anomalies and failures.
• Act as escalation point for backup incidents: troubleshoot failures and performance issues, support root cause analysis, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
• Perform and validate backup integrity checks, restore testing (file-level, VM-level, application-level where applicable), and disaster recovery and replication failover tests; ensure RPO/RTO targets are met for critical workloads.
• Support user acceptance testing (UAT) for backup and recovery processes.
• Engineer, implement and maintain backup immutability (e.g., Azure immutable blob/CCES where applicable), role-based access control and privileged access governance, and encryption and secure communication configurations.
• Support integration with Rubrik security capabilities such as Anomaly Detection, ransomware protection and recovery workflows, and Rubrik Cloud Vault.
• Work with adjacent engineering teams to integrate backup services into Azure networking (VLANs, subnets, DNS, firewall rules), identity and access systems (CyberArk/SailPoint), and CMDB and change management processes; validate network connectivity and infrastructure prerequisites.
• Maintain all Rubrik assets in CMDB, execute changes in line with Change Management procedures and security and compliance controls, and support audits by providing backup evidence, recovery validation reports, and compliance documentation.
• Develop and maintain runbooks and SOPs for backup and recovery operations, architecture diagrams and platform qualification documentation, and provide knowledge transfer and operational readiness documentation for BAU teams.
• Collaborate with infrastructure teams (Windows/Linux/VMware), cloud engineering teams (Azure), security and risk teams (DTIS), and application owners; translate business requirements into actionable backup strategies and provide advisory support on data protection best practices.

What you'll need

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent experience.
• 7 - 10 years of experience in relevant field.
• Proven experience in backup and recovery engineering.
• Rubrik CDM platform experience (mandatory).
• Azure infrastructure and cloud-based backup solutions experience.
• Hands-on experience with VM backups (VMware VCF).
• Experience with enterprise data protection strategies.
• Experience with disaster recovery planning and execution.
• Strong expertise in Rubrik CDM, RSC, and associated Rubrik tooling.
• Strong expertise in backup methodologies (snapshot, incremental, replication, archive).
• Strong expertise in Azure networking and infrastructure.
• Understanding of cyber resilience and ransomware mitigation strategies.
• Understanding of data lifecycle management.

Nice to have

• Backup and recovery engineering experience of minimum 5+ years.
• Familiarity with automation (PowerShell/scripting).
• Familiarity with monitoring and alerting tools.
• Familiarity with identity and access management (CyberArk/SailPoint).
• Familiarity with Agile methodologies and tools (Jira, Confluence).
• Rubrik Certified Professional (RCP) certification.
• Microsoft Azure certifications.
• ITIL Foundation or equivalent certification.

Details

• Role operates in a hybrid architecture spanning Rubrik CDM Azure-based virtual clusters, on-premise physical appliances, and Edge appliances at manufacturing sites, with Rubrik Security Cloud (RSC) as the centralized SaaS management platform.
• Ability to operate in a global, multi-site environment (Edge, Azure regions).
• Ability to work under pressure during critical recovery events.
