Overview

An Assistant Vice President Software Engineer role at Barclays, leading the design, development and delivery of secure, scalable and resilient applications with primary accountability for PING ID solutions, combining hands-on engineering with technical oversight and team leadership.

What you'll do

• Develop and deliver high-quality software solutions using industry-aligned programming languages, frameworks and tools, ensuring code is scalable, maintainable and optimized for performance.
• Lead the design, development and support of secure, scalable and high-performing applications.
• Take part in hands-on software engineering activities, including coding, solution design, code reviews, architecture governance, troubleshooting and technical delivery.
• Define and implement engineering standards, patterns and development best practices.
• Drive adoption of modern CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, security controls and release automation.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, Product Owner, Solution Architect, Security, Platform, QA and other engineers to define requirements, devise solution strategies and ensure seamless integration.
• Guide architectural discussions and ensure solutions are scalable, maintainable, secure and aligned to engineering standards.
• Provide technical leadership across PING ID, Java, JavaScript, APIs, Docker, Google Cloud and secure code engineering.
• Adhere to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities and protect sensitive data, and implement effective unit testing practices.
• Ensure compliance with enterprise security, risk, governance and regulatory requirements.
• Mentor and coach team members on career development through feedback, technical assistance, performance management and development planning.
• Set objectives for employees, coach them toward those objectives, and appraise performance relative to objectives.
• Support recruitment, onboarding and team growth initiatives.
• Champion DevSecOps practices, observability, reliability engineering and operational excellence.
• Promote knowledge sharing through code reviews, technical discussions, pairing sessions and documentation.
• Balance technical excellence with delivery commitments and business outcomes.
• Stay informed of industry technology trends and actively contribute to technology communities.

What you'll need

• Software engineering experience within large-scale, complex or long-lived mobile codebases.
• Strong understanding of software architecture, maintainability and modern engineering practices.
• Experience balancing technical quality, operational stability, performance and delivery objectives.
• Comfortable providing technical guidance, code reviews and architectural direction.
• Strong communication, stakeholder management and influencing skills.
• Experience driving a culture of engineering excellence and continuous improvement.
• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
• Ability to design, build, test and operate production services using ProofID Skillset, Java, JavaScript, Google Cloud, Docker and Kubernetes.
• Ability to use AI engineering tools to accelerate research, code understanding, prototyping, implementation and documentation while applying sound engineering judgment.
• Experience building production services, distributed systems or shared platform capabilities.
• Experience designing and implementing APIs, RESTful services, integration contracts, and data or domain models.
• Experience turning requirements and ambiguous problems into designs, prototypes and production-ready solutions.
• Experience with authentication, authorization and identity management.
• Experience with OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, token exchange, policy systems, delegated administration or identity data modelling.
• Ability to communicate technical decisions clearly, collaborate across teams and time zones, and support other engineers through feedback and knowledge sharing.

Nice to have

• Experience with AI agent identity and non-human identity.
• Familiarity with MCP, agent skills and other agent integration concepts.
