Design Engineer

Overview

Design Engineer for Vercel’s AI Gateway, owning product design and frontend implementation across customer-facing surfaces (website, dashboard, CLI, and APIs).

What you'll do

• Own product design and frontend implementation for parts of the model discovery to first successful request journey.
• Design and build production experiences across website, dashboard, CLI, and APIs.
• Make provider/model/credential/routing/budget/log/observability/privacy/governance systems understandable and extensible.
• Partner with customers, a Product Manager, and engineers to understand problems, define success, and improve what ships.
• Own quality after launch, covering visual/interaction craft, accessibility, performance, resilience, instrumentation, and edge cases.
• Use coding agents to explore and implement ideas, with testing, debugging, and responsibility for shipped code.

What you'll need

• Build production-quality web applications with React and TypeScript.
• Contribute confidently in a large, existing codebase.
• Demonstrate strong visual and interaction craft.
• Make technical or data-rich products understandable without removing control advanced users need.
• Comfort moving between graphical interfaces, CLI workflows, and API behavior.
• Use customer research and product data to make decisions and communicate reasoning.
• Use coding agents but can explain, test, debug, and take responsibility for the code produced.

Nice to have

• Experience with developer tools, infrastructure products, model marketplaces, or observability experiences.
• Experience with AI models/providers/inference platforms/guardrails/AI application tooling.
• Experience with APIs, command-line tools, structured product content, or agent-facing interfaces.
• Built an application or agent with Vercel’s AI SDK or AI Gateway.

• Work mode: Remote (United States); office anchor days apply only if within commuting distance of SF, NY, London, or Berlin.
• San Francisco, CA base pay range: $208,000 - $312,000.
