Overview
Director of Engineering (Organizations & Cells) to lead a horizontally scalable cluster charter for GitLab.com, delivering and operating Organizations and Cells without customers seeing a cell.
What you'll do
- Deliver the Cells and Organizations roadmap (cell provisioning/lifecycle, routing/topology, migration tooling, feature parity).
- Execute cohort-based migrations of customer Organizations onto cells with zero data loss, verified rollback, and no downtime outside the tenant in flight.
- Define and govern a multi-cloud, multi-region cell footprint (what stays cell-local vs crosses boundaries).
- Build and run the engineering organization by hiring, leveling, and developing managers and senior ICs across multiple teams.
- Set the technical bar and operating cadence for the organization.
- Lead cross-functional commitments and sequencing with Product, Infrastructure, and Security, often asynchronously via issues and merge requests.
What you'll need
- Engineering leadership at director scale.
- Experience leading multiple teams through managers (about 25–60 engineers).
- Track record shipping multi-quarter infrastructure programs with hard external dependencies.
- Comfort operating as a peer to VPs and staff-plus engineers with evidence-based architectural decisions.
- Strong written communication (influence via documents).
- Depth in distributed systems (multi-tenant SaaS, sharded/cell-based architectures, control planes, data platforms, request routing, and data migration at scale).
- Experience with incident command, capacity planning, and blast-radius containment.
- Cloud infrastructure depth on at least one major provider (ideally more than one).
- AI-native engineering understanding of agentic access patterns and use of AI tooling in practice.
