Overview

Join Barclays as an Engineering Excellence Lead within the Development Platform organization. The role focuses on educating and upskilling developers, fostering a developer community, championing Development Platform products, and helping developers adopt modern engineering practices, learn new tools, and improve their craft.

What you'll do

  • Design, develop and improve software using various engineering methodologies.
  • Develop and deliver high-quality software solutions using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools.
  • Ensure code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
  • Participate in code reviews and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and contribute to technology communities.
  • Adhere to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
  • Implement effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.
  • Educate and upskill developers and foster a thriving developer community.
  • Champion Development Platform products.
  • Build technical demos, hands-on workshops, prototypes, and code samples to support education efforts.
  • Learn quickly, validate through POCs, and collaborate effectively.
  • Advise key stakeholders, including functional leadership teams and senior management, on functional and cross-functional areas of impact and alignment.
  • Manage and mitigate risks through assessment in support of the control and governance agenda.
  • Demonstrate leadership and accountability for managing risk and strengthening controls in relation to the work your team does.
  • Create solutions based on sophisticated analytical thought by comparing and selecting complex alternatives.
  • Use in-depth analysis and interpretative thinking to define problems and develop innovative solutions.
  • Adopt and include the outcomes of extensive research in problem-solving processes.
  • Build and maintain trusting relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders using influencing and negotiating skills.
  • Contribute or set strategy, drive requirements, and make recommendations for change.
  • Plan resources, budgets, and policies; manage and maintain policies and processes; deliver continuous improvements; and escalate breaches of policies and procedures.
  • For an individual contributor, act as a subject matter expert within your discipline, guide technical direction, lead collaborative multi-year assignments, and guide team members through structured assignments.
  • Train, guide, and coach less experienced specialists and provide information affecting long-term profits, organisational risks, and strategic decisions.

What you'll need

  • Strong software engineering background with hands-on experience in modern development practices, including CI/CD, DevOps, and Infrastructure as Code.
  • Proficiency in at least one major programming language, such as Python, Java, C#, or Go.
  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills, with comfort addressing audiences of all sizes.
  • Good technical writing skills, with the ability to simplify complex concepts for diverse audiences.
  • Foundational understanding of AI concepts and experience with agentic applications.
  • Hands-on experience with AI-powered development environments and agentic IDEs.
  • Ability to learn quickly, validate through POCs, and collaborate effectively.

Nice to have

  • Experience in developer education, developer enablement, or technical advocacy.
  • Background in hosting technical workshops, hackathons, or meetups.
  • Familiarity with open-source software and community-driven development.
  • Experience implementing documentation-as-code practices and workflows.
