Overview
Hands-on Engineering Manager in Bengaluru to lead a team that owns production software end to end, from customer needs through build and operation, while still designing systems, reviewing code and working on incidents.
What you'll do
- Lead a team of engineers and own what it delivers, measured by what changed for customers.
- Help build the team: define what good looks like, interview, and close candidates.
- Set the bar for testing, release and on-call so the team ships often without breaking customers.
- Make and document architecture tradeoffs for your area, staying close enough to the code to know when a design is wrong.
- Run 1:1s, give direct feedback, and create stretch paths so strong engineers grow faster than a standard promotion cycle.
- Work closely with Product, Program Management, Customer Support and business stakeholders.
What you'll need
- At least 2 years directly managing a team, including hiring, feedback, performance conversations, and growing people.
- At least 4 years in a tech-lead role.
- Recent hands-on experience designing and building production systems, and the ability to review a pull request or design doc and find the real problem in it.
- Experience owning multiple systems in production end to end, including releases, incidents, and follow-through after.
- Experience delivering under ambiguity: taking a problem nobody had fully defined, such as a new product, an inherited system, or a team in transition, and turning it into something shipped.
- Experience building and operating production systems with a modern stack, such as AWS, one or more modern languages such as Python, Java or JavaScript/TypeScript, and modern service frameworks such as FastAPI, Node.js or equivalents.
- In-depth database experience: data modeling, query and index optimization, and scaling (replication, partitioning, caching).
Nice to have
- Impact you can explain: a named result, the baseline it moved from, and how the team got there, including stopping or cutting something that wasn't working.
- Teams you've grown, with people hired or coached who went on to bigger roles.
- Experience handling real load, real data volume or a genuinely hard domain, and telling the story of one hard technical problem in detail.
- Experience taking over a codebase or product from another team or location and making it better without stopping delivery.
- Experience raising a team's bar on testing, releases or incident response, and showing what changed.
- Experience working directly with product, support and business partners and making scoping calls rather than just executing them.
- A framework mindset: finding opportunities to convert a custom implementation into a framework.
