Overview
Field Integration Engineers connect software engineering, customer interaction and hands-on field operations, driving full-stack integration and deployment of software on customer hardware, physical vehicles and test benches, mainly in the greater Chicago area.
What you'll do
- Deploy, configure and integrate vehicle software stack, middleware and application-level code on customer target hardware, HIL simulators and vehicle platforms.
- Serve as the primary technical escalation point on-site, collecting logs and telemetry, bisecting software pipelines, debugging system crashes and isolating root causes across software-hardware boundaries.
- Debug and validate communication interfaces (CAN, LIN, Automotive Ethernet, J1939) and verify end-to-end data flow between sensors, ECUs and application software.
- Partner closely with internal core software and firmware engineering teams to reproduce complex field issues, validate fixes and push continuous system improvements.
- Write Python scripts, Bash automation and internal tooling to streamline deployment, automated diagnostics and log collection in field environments.
- Work directly with customer engineering leadership to define target integration use-cases, articulate system constraints and establish clear integration milestones.
What you'll need
- BS or MS in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science or a related technical field.
- Strong programming skills in embedded C and/or C++, with solid software engineering practices in Linux development and command-line environments.
- 2+ years of hands-on experience integrating, testing and debugging software applications on physical target platforms or embedded hardware.
- Practical understanding of automotive or industrial network topologies, protocol analysis (CAN, Ethernet, J1939) and diagnostic standards (UDS, DoIP, OBD-II).
- Strong analytical skills to systematically isolate faults across multi-component software pipelines and hardware interfaces.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the confidence to represent the engineering team in fast-paced, high-stakes customer environments.
- Ability and willingness to travel 30%–50%+ to domestic and international customer locations and testing sites.
Nice to have
- Experience with vehicle platforms, autonomous systems, robotics or active industrial/field environments.
- Familiarity with AUTOSAR platform concepts (RTE, SWCs, ARXML), SIL/HIL test rigs, or ROS/ROS2 architecture.
- Experience using network analysis tools (e.g., Vector CANoe/CANape, Wireshark, PEAK-System) or hardware debugging tools (oscilloscopes, multimeters).
- Scripting capability in Python for data processing, log parsing or test automation.
