Overview
Lead the design, development, and delivery of scalable, high-performance backend applications as a Senior Java Developer Lead. Combine hands-on engineering with team leadership while overseeing a team of 4–8 developers and contributing to coding, architecture, and technical decision-making.
What you'll do
- Own the architecture and design of Java-based microservices and backend applications.
- Define coding standards, design patterns, and best practices, and enforce them through code reviews.
- Evaluate and recommend tools, frameworks, and technologies; drive modernization and technical-debt reduction.
- Make trade-offs between performance, scalability, security, and maintainability.
- Lead, guide, and mentor a team of developers; run regular 1:1s and support career growth.
- Break down requirements into technical tasks, estimate effort, and assign work.
- Take part in hiring through interviews, technical assessments, and onboarding of new engineers.
- Build a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous learning.
- Write clean, efficient, well-tested code using Java 17+ and Spring Boot.
- Design and build RESTful APIs and event-driven services using Kafka or similar.
- Optimize application and database performance and troubleshoot complex production issues.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines with the DevOps team.
- Work with product owners and business analysts to refine requirements and define acceptance criteria.
- Lead Agile ceremonies with the Scrum Master, including sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives.
- Track delivery, flag risks early, and keep stakeholders informed of progress.
- Ensure releases meet quality, security, and compliance standards.
What you'll need
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- 8+ years of Java development.
- 2+ years leading or mentoring a development team.
- Core Java experience including Java 11/17+, OOP, collections, multithreading and concurrency, JVM tuning, and garbage collection.
- Experience with Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Security, Spring Data JPA, and Hibernate.
- Experience with microservices, REST API design, design patterns, and domain-driven design basics.
- Experience with Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ, or ActiveMQ.
- Experience with SQL, including PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Oracle, and at least one NoSQL store, including MongoDB, Redis, or Cassandra.
- Experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP; Docker; Kubernetes; and Jenkins, GitLab CI, or GitHub Actions.
- Experience with JUnit 5, Mockito, and integration testing; TDD mindset.
- Experience with Git, Maven or Gradle, Jira, and Confluence.
- Knowledge of Agile/Scrum, code reviews, and secure coding using OWASP Top 10.
- Clear written and verbal communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking under pressure.
- Ability to coach, give constructive feedback, and resolve conflicts within the team.
- Ownership mindset: accountable for outcomes, not just tasks.
- Comfort balancing hands-on coding with leadership responsibilities.
Nice to have
- Experience in payments, fintech, banking, or other high-volume transaction systems.
- Knowledge of reactive programming, including Spring WebFlux and Project Reactor.
- Experience with observability tools, including New Relic, Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, or the ELK stack.
- Infrastructure as code experience with Terraform or CloudFormation.
- Cloud certification, including AWS Certified Developer or Solutions Architect, or equivalent.
- Exposure to frontend frameworks, including React or Angular, for full-stack collaboration.
