Overview
The Principal Platform Engineer is a hands-on technical leader responsible for defining, building, evolving, and governing secure, scalable, reliable, and cost-effective cloud platform architecture and infrastructure. The role sets technical direction and standards across public and private cloud while enabling engineering teams through self-service capabilities, automation, and sound platform practices.
What you'll do
- Design and architect scalable AWS cloud infrastructure.
- Develop infrastructure-as-code solutions using Terraform.
- Lead cloud technology evaluation and standardisation initiatives.
- Build, optimise, and maintain CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure deployment.
- Establish DevOps and DevSecOps best practices across the organisation.
- Architect and manage Kubernetes environments across EKS, AKS, and GKE.
- Implement platform engineering tools to deliver self-service capabilities via an IDP such as Backstage.
- Define and enforce monitoring, alerting, and observability standards to ensure infrastructure reliability and performance.
- Foster collaboration between development and operations teams to drive a unified engineering culture.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineering teams.
- Write and maintain documentation to support knowledge sharing.
- Define, build, evolve, and govern cloud platform architecture and infrastructure.
- Work closely with engineering, security, and FinOps teams to embed best practices into platform design and delivery.
- Influence complex technical decisions, reduce platform risk, and enable engineering teams to build and operate services with confidence, speed, and financial discipline.
What you'll need
- Overall 12+ years of experience.
- 4+ years in cloud infrastructure engineering.
- Hands-on experience designing and administering complex platforms across AWS, GCP, and Azure.
- Deep knowledge of networking, including VPC, Direct Connect, Transit Gateways, BGP, and OSPF.
- Knowledge of IaaS/PaaS architectural patterns.
- 2+ years with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or Ansible.
- Hands-on experience with orchestration and automation platforms including AWX, Ansible Tower, and Terragrunt.
- Scripting experience in Python, Bash, or Go.
- 2+ years designing and implementing CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, GitLab, GitHub Actions, or equivalent.
- Strong knowledge of security best practices, including secrets management, vulnerability scanning, and compliance.
- 2+ years of Kubernetes administration across on-premises and cloud environments.
- Proficiency in Kubernetes networking, RBAC, pod security, service mesh such as Istio, and Docker image management.
- Experience implementing developer portals such as Backstage, artifact repositories such as JFrog Artifactory or Nexus, API gateways, and self-service platform engineering tools to support internal teams.
- Hands-on experience with monitoring and observability platforms including Honeycomb, Prometheus, and Grafana.
- Experience defining alerting standards and ensuring infrastructure reliability at scale.
- Strong grasp of microservices architecture, cloud networking protocols including Layer 2/3 and MPLS, DNS, load balancing, and traffic management.
- Ability to independently influence technical direction.
- Proficiency across version control systems including Git, GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket.
- Ability to operate autonomously and drive engineering standards across teams.
