Overview
Product Owner for a technical Agile team developing digital solutions for core engineering, including data-driven design, workflow automation, electrical wiring harness and hydraulic circuit design improvements, aircraft safety analysis and engineering business data monitoring. The role owns the team backlog within an Agile Release Train and requires a software development background.
What you'll do
- Create, refine and prioritise the team backlog so there is always at least two iterations of ready work.
- Break features handed down from Product Management into user stories and technical enablers with clear acceptance criteria.
- Sequence work based on value, dependencies, technical risk and capacity, and explain the sequence.
- Make informed calls on technical debt and enabler work.
- Represent the team at PI Planning, contribute to planning objectives, negotiate scope, and surface and resolve dependencies with other teams on the train.
- Run backlog refinement and participate in Iteration Planning, Iteration Review, System Demo and Inspect & Adapt.
- Work alongside the Scrum Master or Team Coach, Product Management, the RTE and the System Architect to keep the team aligned with ART priorities.
- Accept stories against defined acceptance criteria and the Definition of Done.
- Validate what was built against what was intended, including performance, security and maintainability requirements.
- Provide fast, unambiguous answers to the team during the iteration and unblock the team.
- Gather input from users, business stakeholders and support/operations, and translate it into backlog items.
- Keep stakeholders informed on progress, trade-offs and changes.
- Push back, with reasoning, when scope requests threaten quality or committed PI objectives.
What you'll need
- 8+ Years of experience.
- A solid, practical understanding of the full software development life cycle, including requirements, design, development, testing, release and maintenance.
- Hands-on experience building software in at least one of Java, C++ or C#.
- Working experience with front-end frameworks and libraries such as Angular, jQuery, Ext JS or Node.js.
- Demonstrable experience as a Product Owner in a scaled Agile setup such as SAFe, LeSS or Nexus.
- Practical, first-hand participation in PI Planning and the full SAFe iteration cadence, not just theoretical familiarity.
- Strong story writing, including clear acceptance criteria, INVEST-shaped stories and well-defined enablers.
- Confidence prioritising with an explicit method such as WSJF, cost of delay or similar, and defending those decisions to senior stakeholders.
- Comfort working with distributed teams across time zones, including counterparts in Europe or other regions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication in English.
- Fluency with backlog and collaboration tooling such as Jira, Azure DevOps and Confluence.
Nice to have
- Exposure to aerospace or aviation programmes, systems or regulatory context.
- SAFe Product Owner / Product Manager (POPM) certification, or willingness to certify within the first six months.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, version control workflows and automated testing practices.
- Exposure to data-informed product decisions, including defining metrics, reading them and changing course based on them.
- Experience transitioning from an engineering role into product ownership.
